Air Purifiers

Air purifiers are devices that help filter and clean the air in your home or business. By removing airborne contaminants and pollutants, your air will always be clean and safe, all year round.

Air quality is a big concern in Australia, especially in large cities where smog and other airborne pollution can be a problem. An air purifier can help you breathe easier, can help reduce symptoms of respiratory problems and allergies as well as remove viruses, odours, smoke, chemical fumes and much more. Read on for more information.

Why You Should Consider Buying An Air Purifier?

There are many reasons why purchasing an air purifier is something to consider. Fumes, dust, viruses, pollen, smoke and chemical vapours are all things that we regularly find in our indoor air, often without realising it. While we cannot control the quality of the air we breath outside, we definitely can for our air indoors.

Air pollution is a problem in many of our cities, and it can cause a variety of health issues, including respiratory problems, headaches, and fatigue. An air purifier will help remove contaminants from your air, making the air you breathe fresh, clean and safe.

But external pollution isn't the only cause of potentially harmful air quality inside your home or office. In fact the EPA have documented that indoor air pollution is often 2 to 5 times higher than the air outside.

This is due to a variety of causes. Furnishings, carpet and paint are some of leading causes of indoor air pollution and can be potentially harmful if not removed. They can release VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), chemical toxins and other unwanted pollutants into your air.

Buying a quality air purifier is the quickest and easiest way to remove these pollutants and keep your air clean and safe 24 hours a day, all year round.

Having clean air is especially important if you suffer from allergies or asthma. Allergens like dust, pollen, mould and pet dander can trigger asthma attacks and can make allergy symptoms worse. If you own an air purifier, you can remove these allergens from the air, making it easier to breathe and reducing the likelihood of an asthma attack or allergy flare ups.

Filters you want in your Air Purifier

There are a variety of filters and technology used in air purifiers in today. All quality brands will have a series of filters that will trap different sized particles. When buying an air purifier make sure it includes the below three:

  • Pre filter - This is a washable filter that traps larger particles like dust and hair.
  • Activated Carbon filter - This filter removes odours, VOCs, smoke fumes, gases and other chemical & paint fumes
  • HEPA filter - Make sure you buy an air purifier with a true HEPA filter. H13 is the highest grade for residential machines, so try and look for one with a H13 HEPA.

Most of our brands also offer a further layer of protections that will kill microorganisms that are trapped inside your filter or in your air.

Types of Air Purifiers

There are a variety of makes and models on the market, ranging from small, portable units to larger units that can purifier very large areas. The type of air purifier that is right for you will depend on your specific needs and the size of the space that you need to purify.

Portable air purifiers are typically designed for small spaces, such as a single room, and can be moved from one room to another as needed. Larger model air purifiers are designed to purify big open spaces or even your whole home or work place.

Things To Consider When Buying An Air Purifier

There are a few key things to keep in mind before you make your purchase.

True HEPA filter

  • The most important thing when choosing an air purifier is the quality of the filters, epically the HEPA filter. As we mentioned previously, avoid any brand that offers "HEPA like" or "HEPA Type" filters. These will not perform well and will deteriorate much quicker than True HEPA. At a minimum, choose one that has at least an H12 HEPA filter but ideally go for a model that has a Hospital Grade H13 HEPA Filter.

Room size

  • The next thing to consider is room size. It is really important to match your unit to the size of the space that you will be using it in.
  • It is much better to purchase a machine that is rated higher than the size of your room rather than under. Under sizing your machine will mean it isn't purifying your air properly, the unit won't be running efficiently, putting unnecessary strain on it and your air quality will be remain poor.

You can see all the recommended room sizes for each machine in the specification tab on each product page.

Filter replacement schedule and cost

  • The next consideration is the cost of replacement filters. Some air purifiers can require more regular filter replacements than others. While most will only need replacing every 12 months, some models have some filters that need replacing every 4-6 months. Each brand have different pricing depending on the quality and grade of filters.

You can see the filter replacement schedule on each of their product pages.

Noise levels

  • The final thing to consider is the noise level of the purifier. While air purifiers are generally very quiet, higher settings can create more noise. So if noise is a concern then it is important to find a model that runs quietly.
  • If you are noise sensitive then look for a model that has either sleep or auto modes. Sleep modes will run the machine on the lowest setting which is perfect when going to bed.
  • Auto modes will run the purifier on the lowest setting until the unit detects a change in your air quality. They will automatically change settings temporarily until it has cleaned your air. Depending on the air quality, it might set itself to a medium or high setting but quality machines do not take long to clean your air and will quickly go back to the lowest setting until it detects another change in your air.
  • If your model comes with an auto mode function then this is the setting that we recommend you use. It takes away any confusion of what setting you should be using and means you can just turn it on and forget about it.

You can see all the noise levels in the product specifications tabs

By investing in one of these quality brands, you are giving your family, staff, students or customers the quality air they deserve.

Air Purifier FAQ

Q: Do air purifiers use a lot of electricity?

A: No they do not. Luckily they are designed to use a very small amount of power. Most range between 5 watts - 60 watts depending on the fan speed.

Q: How long should I run a air purifier?

A: Air purifiers are designed to be run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We recommend running them all the time to ensure your air is always clean.

Q: Do air purifiers work with the window open?

A: While you can operate an air purifier with an open window they will work more efficiently in a closed room. If your outdoor air contains smoke, pollen, or other air pollution then we recommend leaving your windows closed while running your purifier.
