Why purchase a Dehumidifier in Australia?

There are many reasons why you should purchase a dehumidifier in Australia. The high levels of humidity in the air can cause serious health problems, including respiratory problems and allergies. Dehumidifiers help to remove excess moisture from the air, creating a healthier environment for you and your family.

Another reason is to protect your home or business from damage caused by moisture. Excess humidity can cause wood rot and can also promote the growth of mold and mildew on you furnishings, clothes, walls, carpets and ceilings. By removing excess moisture from the air, you can help to prevent these problems from occurring.

Dehumidifiers come in a variety of sizes and styles, so you can find one that fits your specific needs. There are portable dehumidifiers that you can move from room to room, and there are larger dehumidifiers that will work to remove moisture from extra large areas. No matter what type of dehumidifier you choose, you can be sure that it will provide you with the benefits you need to improve your health and protect your home or business.

Types of Dehumidifiers

There are two types of dehumidifiers: compressor dehumidifiers and desiccant dehumidifiers. The difference between the two types is how they work.

Compressor dehumidifiers use a compressor to remove moisture from the air, while desiccant dehumidifiers use a substance that absorbs moisture from the air.

Both types of dehumidifiers are effective at reducing humidity, but there are a few things to consider before choosing between the two.

Compressor Dehumidifier

This type of dehumidifier come in a wide range of sizes, from small compact models ideal for bedrooms and laundries, to bigger units that are perfect for large areas up to 100m²

A compressor dehumidifier works by compressing air which cools a series of cooling coils. A fan draws in the humid air and passes it over the cooling coils. As the air moves over the cold coils, the moisture in the air is condensed and collected in a storage tank. The now dry air is then released into the room, leaving the space feeling drier and more comfortable.

These dehumidifiers prefer to be used in rooms with an internal temperature of 15-20C. When they are used in an a room that is too cold the cooling pipes can frost over. Most models have an auto defrost mode but if you plan on using one in a room that regularly drops below the above temperatures then you might be better off with a desiccant dehumidifier.

Pros and cons for Compressor Dehumidifiers

There are a few pros and cons to consider when it comes to compressor dehumidifiers.

Pros

  • Multiple range of sizes
  • Larger moisture removal capabilities
  • More affordable
  • More energy efficient
  • Do not add a lot of ambient temperature to your room
  • Easy to maintain and can last for many years with minimal effort
  • No ongoing replacement part costs

Cons

  • Can be a bit noisy
  • Do not perform well in internal temperatures below 20-15C
  • Can frost up in cold temperatures or unheated rooms
  • Larger models can be heavy and bulky

Desiccant Dehumidifier

A Desiccant dehumidifier uses a moisture absorbing substance to remove water from the air. This substance, known as a desiccant. The desiccant absorbs water vapor from the air as it is drawn in to the machine.

The desiccant is then heated which releases the trapped moisture which flows into a collection tank. The now warm, dry air is blowen back into your room, making your space dry and comfortable.

A desiccant dehumidifier will tend to be quite more compact and slightly less noisy than a compressor unit. While they are suited to be used in summer and winter, they are perfect for use in colder temperatures and unheated spaces that drop below 20C. In fact, they can work down to 1C, so they are great for people in colder climates that also want to dry a shed, garage, boat, caravan etc.

While they are suitable for use in large spaces of up to 50m², their moisture removal capacity is smaller than most compressor units. Most models have a maximum removal capacity of 10L a day. While not a major downside, this is something to bare in mind.

The other thing to mention is that, as the desiccant material needs to be heated to release the moisture it captures, this heating process can add some ambient warmth to your room. Generally between 2-5C, so if you live in warmer states then this is something to take into consideration.

If you live in colder climates and your space often falls below 20C then a desiccant dehumidifier is definitely the best option.

Pros and cons of Desiccant Dehumidifiers

As with compressor units, there are a few pros and cons to consider when it comes to desiccant dehumidifiers.

Pros

  • Work very well in cold temperatures and unheated spaces
  • Can be used all year round
  • Slightly quieter than compressor units
  • Compact and light weight design
  • Easy to maintain and can last for many years with minimal effort
  • No ongoing replacement part costs

Cons

  • Smaller moisture removal capabilities
  • Add a bit of ambient warmth to your room
  • Can be more expensive to buy
  • Can use more electricity compared to some compressor models.

Dehumidifier Benefits

There are many benefits to using a dehumidifier in your home or office, these include:

  • Stop mould growth on clothes, wall, ceilings and furnishings. Mould likes to grow in damp conditions and can start to grow when your relative humidity is 55% or higher. Reducing your humidity removes the conditions that mould can grow in.
  • Kill dust mites and stop them from breeding. Similar to mould, dust mites breed in spaces with high humidity. By reducing your humidity, dust mites can not breed.
  • Help with respiratory and allergy symptoms. Humidity in the air can cause respiratory and allergy symptoms to flair up. By lowering your humidity you can drastically improve these symptoms.
  • Stop condensation build up on windows. When warm, humid air inside your home makes contact with the colder temperature of your glass windows it creates condensation. This can leave puddles of water at the base of your windows and create an environment for mould and mites to grow. Using a dehumidifier stops the condensation, leaving your space dry and comfortable.
  • Dry clothes faster. Hanging your wet clothes in a room with a dehumidifier will help dry your clothes much faster. The unit will help draw the moisture from your clothes, drying them much quicker than they would normally.
  • Make your Refrigerant A/C more effective. Humid air is much harder to cool than dry air. Using a dehumidifier dries your air which enables your A/C unit to cool it faster. Using a refrigerant A/C also dramatically increases the area coverage of the dehumidifier.
